Forgiveness & Grace

The Good Shepherd

John 10:1-18

The Parable

Jesus described himself as the good shepherd who enters the sheepfold through the gate, unlike thieves who climb over the wall. His sheep know his voice and follow him, but they will not follow a stranger. The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep, unlike a hired hand who runs away when danger comes because the sheep are not his own. Jesus declared that he has other sheep not of this fold that he must also bring in, so there will be one flock and one shepherd. He emphasized that no one takes his life from him — he lays it down voluntarily.

Historical Context

Jesus spoke these words in Jerusalem, likely during the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah). This teaching followed the healing of a man born blind and the resulting conflict with the Pharisees. By calling himself the good shepherd, Jesus was making a powerful claim, as the Old Testament frequently described God as Israel's shepherd and criticized Israel's leaders as failed shepherds.

Key Lessons

Modern Application

In a world full of competing voices, ideologies, and influencers, this parable encourages discernment about whom we follow. It also sets a high standard for leadership — whether in churches, families, or organizations. True leaders sacrifice for those in their care rather than exploiting them. For anyone feeling vulnerable or lost, the Good Shepherd promises protection and personal care.
