Definition & Details
A **ratio** is a way to compare two or more numbers or quantities. It tells you how much of one thing there is compared to another. Ratios are often used in everyday life, like in recipes, maps, or sports statistics.
Ratios can be written in a few different ways:
- Using a colon: 3 : 5 (read as "3 to 5")
- Using the word "to": 3 to 5
- As a fraction: 3/5
The order of the numbers in a ratio matters! For example, a ratio of 3:5 is different from 5:3.
Examples
- Apples to Bananas: If you have 3 apples and 5 bananas, the ratio of apples to bananas is 3:5.
- Students in a Class: In a class with 12 girls and 10 boys, the ratio of girls to boys is 12:10. This can be simplified to 6:5 by dividing both numbers by 2.
- Ingredients in a Recipe: A recipe calls for 2 cups of flour for every 1 cup of sugar. The ratio of flour to sugar is 2:1.
Synonyms
Comparison, proportion (closely related), fraction.
